What Is True Worship? What Does Worship Mean To You?

What is true worship? What does worship mean to you?

Merriam-Webster defines worship as honor and reverence for a divine being or supernatural power. To regard with extravagant respect, honor or devotion.

Sounds great! But what does it mean?

Worship is everything we think, everything we say,

and everything we do, revealing that which we treasure

and value most in life.

Where is your priority in worship?

When God is the priority of our life, true worship begins. Our lifestyle changes. We begin to see ourselves as God sees us. Our lifestyle should reflect exaggerate, extravagant love for God.

We worship God because of who he is. He loved us first and loves us too much to leave as we were. He is worthy of our worship.

Psalm 29:2 Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name; worship the Lord in the splendor of his holiness.

Psalm 95:6 Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the Lord our Maker;

Psalm 96:9 Worship the Lord in the splendor of his holiness; tremble before him, all the earth.

Worship can happen anytime or anywhere. We don’t need anything special to worship.

Pouring out my heart to God, praising Him for His grace and mercy. Living each day with an ‘attitude of gratitude’ for the many blessings we enjoy.

What is the promise of worship?

The promise of worship is communion with God. When we go to God with extravagant love and extreme submission, he meets us there. He communes with us in response to our worship.

We can miss the promise that comes from worship. What if we miss that communion with God because we don’t like something about the worship service? We can fail to see what is really going on in worship and then leave in much the same way as when we came.

Worship is a powerful weapon. It is an opportunity to be renewed. As we enter worship with God, our attitude should be one of joyful reverence. Our lives are enriched through worship with others.

“If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land. Now my eyes will be open and my ears attentive to the prayer that is made in this place. For now I have chosen and consecrated this house that my name may be there forever” (2 Chronicles 7:14-16).

Ask yourself, does my worship glorify God?
